Come Thou Long Expected Jesus

“Come thou long expected Jesus, born to set thy people free; From our sin and fears release us; let us find our rest in Thee.” ELW-#254

We stand on tip-toe once more peering into the darkened stage.

We long for Bethlehem, knowing that Bethlehem has to be more than a place.

To long for Bethlehem, is to long for peace, in so many areas of our world.

To long for Bethlehem is to long for home; home for the homeless, and for those who wander the world with a vacant look in their eyes.

To long for Bethlehem is to pray for the children, who have asked only for a safe place, a love to warm them, and food to nourish their withered bodies.

To long for Bethlehem is to pray that the deep divides that threaten to undo us as a nation might be healed and that we might be part of the healing. (The rest of the world holds its breath and waits.)

To long for Bethlehem is to be given the courage to face our own incredible personal challenges, whatever they might be. These challenges are much too great to face alone. It is not just about us.

We need each other, and the One who comes. And so, we pray:

“Come thou long expected Jesus, born to set thy people free; from our sins and fears release us, let us find our rest in Thee. Amen.”
