He has Risen!

Read John
Chapter 20

“He has risen!” What does this mean for you?

Jesus appears first to Mary Magdalene; do you think God had a reason for that? That same evening Jesus appears to the disciples behind locked doors. His first words to them were, “Peace be with you.” He said it twice then – and the Lord knows we need that today more than ever. Jesus gifted the disciples with the Holy Spirit.

One of the disciples was missing, the one who gets the bad rap of “Doubting Thomas.” The disciples tell him the unbelievable story that Jesus is alive; Thomas saw Jesus die. He needed more proof. So later that week Jesus shows up again behind closed doors and says the same thing, “Peace be with you.” This time Thomas was there and received the proof he was lacking. Thomas confessed, “My Lord and God!” Thomas was the first person in the Gospel of John to proclaim that Jesus is God. Jesus responded, “Have you believed because you have seen me?  Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have come to believe.” Is Jesus talking about us?

The ending of the 20th chapter of John says, “Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book. But these are written so that you may come to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that through believing you may have life in his name.”

He is risen indeed.
